Judge Advocate Corps

Mission

To provide pro bono legal assistance to members of the Maryland National Guard and their families, and to perform other legal support functions as approved and assigned by the Chief of the Directorate of Legal Services, Maryland Defense Force.

Activities

Lawyers in the Directorate of Legal Services serve each of the 23 counties in Maryland in order to ensure "local" coverage for Guard members and their families. Lawyers provide support to several Guard units throughout the state. Such activities may include the preparation of wills and powers-of-attorney, preventive legal training and lectures, and support to the state military justice system.

The key role of Defense Force lawyers is to provide pro bono assistance to Army and Air National Guard members and their dependents who face pressing legal challenges. Legal entanglements become especially acute when the service member has been called to active duty and sent overseas. Maryland Guardsmen have been called to federal service in numbers not seen since WW II. Maryland Defense Force lawyers have answered the call, repeatedly and often, to assist these citizen soldiers. The benefit to individual members supported is substantial. The satisfaction lawyers enjoy from assisting a service member in urgent need makes Defense Force membership very worthwhile. As a secondary benefit, service to guardsmen and families may be reported as pro bono hours to the MD Court of Appeals.

The Maryland Defense Force is always looking for licensed Maryland attorneys. Prior military service is not a prerequisite, but a desire to assist Maryland Army and Air National Guardsmen and their families is crucial. The need for Maryland Defense Force lawyers is most acute in the areas of family law, real estate, and creditor-debtor rights. More counsel in these specialty areas are needed throughout the State. The range of issues faced by Guardsmen and their families is extremely varied, and in most instances the real benefit is having the support of counsel willing to intervene and resolve a problem that seems daunting to the Guardsman.
